History of the USS LA (CA-135) Association

In the summer of 1977, Jim Morrow of Palm Springs, CA, thought he would get a few shipmates together who had served on the USS Los Angeles (CA-135). He used the VFW, Fleet Reserve Association, and the retired newsletters to locate as many personnel as he could before the first reunion was scheduled.
#1 - 1977 - Riviera Resort Hotel, Palm Springs, CA -  Jim Morrow organized this one from scratch and had about 100 shipmates turned out. Jim was assisted by the Sales Promotion Manager at the hotel who had served on the USS Los Angeles (CA-135) for a short period.  Simple rules were adopted and the next reunion was scheduled in San Jose, California, in 1979 with Bernie (Frenchie) La Franchise as the Chairman. This group became known as the USS Los Angeles (CA-135) Association.
#2 - 1978 - Montevideo, Minneapolis, MN  -  Marlyn Anderson (who didn't even know the first reunion had happened) organized a small backyard affair and was attended by 13 USS Los Angeles (CA-135) shipmates (This became known as the Eastern Group).  Some of the attendees were: Jerry Huck; Herman Hall; Jack Darrow; Walter Cagle; Dave Petersen; and the Looney brothers, Bill and Dave.
#3 - 1979 - Marriott Hotel, St. Louis, MO  -  Dave Looney, Chairman; Bill Looney and Jerry Huck, Co-Chairmen.
#4 - 1979 - San Jose, CA  -  Bernie (Frenchie) La Franchise, Chairman.   Again, a good turnout. The Looney brothers represented the Eastern Group and, believe it or not, the two groups started talking to each other!
#5 - 1981 - The Queen Mary, Long Beach, CA  -  George Street, Chairman, Herman Hall, Co-Chairman, and an organizing committee combined the Eastern and Western groups with a very good turnout.
1983:  A reunion was scheduled to be held in Florida, but was never held. It was a bust and several lessons were learned.
#6 - 1984 - Bahia Resort Hotel, San Diego, CA  -  Again, Jim Morrow (who was always a die-hard kind of guy) organized a reunion in San Diego and, with the help of a few of the old timers, it was a big success. We, as a group, owe Jim Morrow big time because without his efforts to take on another reunion, most of the previously gained momentum would have been lost.
#7 - 1986 - Antlers Hotel, Colorado Springs, CO  -  Myron Shoemaker, Walter Tucker and Ray Henke were Co-Chairmen, and an organizing committee.  (Ray is deceased)
#8 - 1988 - New Orleans, LA  -  Henry Stephens and Cliff MacArthur, Co-Chairmen, and an organizing committee.  (Cliff is now deceased)
#9 - 1990 - Holiday Inn, Philadelphia, PA  -  Jim Limbert, M. Samson and Tom Weeks were Co-Chairmen, and an organizing committee.  (M. Samson is deceased)
#10 - 1991 - Marriott Hotel, Raleigh-Durham, NC  -  Craig Jumper, Chairman, and an organizing committee.
#11 - 1992 - The Queen Mary, Long Beach, CA  -  Fred Jones, Chairman, and an organizing committee.
#12 - 1994 - Omni Hotel, Charleston, SC  -  Bob Carson, Chairman, and an organizing committee.
#13 - 1995 - Sheraton Los Angeles Harbor Hotel, San Pedro, CA  -  Special 50th Anniversary Reunion Commemorating the Initial Commissioning of the USS Los Angeles (CA-135).  Norman Booth, Chairman, and a 15 member organizing committee.
#14 - 1997 - Chicago, IL  -  Raymond Creagan, Chairman, and an organizing committee.
#15 - 1999 - Patrick Henry Inn, Williamsburg, VA  -  The hotel was across the street from Colonial Williamsburg.  The reunion included a tour of the Norfolk Navy Base, a general meeting which included breakfast, a wonderful banquet & a hospitality room that was almost always open!  Luther Keith, Chairman, and an organizing committee.
#16 - 2001 - Westcoast Grand Hotel, Seattle, WA  -  The hotel was in downtown Seattle, maybe a half-mile from the waterfront & about a mile from the Space Needle.  Lots of shopping nearby!  Jerry Carlson, Chairman, and an organizing committee.
#17 - 2003 - Lodge of the Ozarks, Branson, MO  -  About 250 attended the reunion in the veteran-friendly city of Branson.  Frank Espinosa, and an organizing committee.
#18 - 2005 - Boston Park Plaza Hotel, Boston, MA  -  The hotel was in downtown Boston.  On their way to the tour of the USS Salem, many shipmates had their first ride on a subway.  Hiller Zobel, Chairman, and an organizing committee.
#19 - 2007 - Plaza Hotel, Las Vegas, NV  -  Bob Ellis was the chairman of this reunion; he had lots of help during the reunion to make it very enjoyable for about 120 shipmates and a similar number of spouses/guests.
